Crochet Snowflake Spiral Christmas Ornament

These elegant Christmas ornaments combine a crocheted flower or snowflake, a hanging spiral, beads, crystals, bells, tassels, or small Christmas baubles. The combination of white and icy blue gives them a beautiful winter appearance and makes them perfect for decorating a Christmas tree, window, mantel, doorway, or holiday table.

The design can be customized easily. Make the spiral longer or shorter, change the colors, or replace the tassel with a bauble or bell.

Crochet Snowflake Flower

The top section begins with an eight-petal crochet flower.

Using white yarn:

Ch 6, join with sl st to form a ring.

Round 1

Ch 1 and work 16 sc into the ring.

Join with sl st.

Round 2

Work:

sc in next st, ch 6, sk 1 st

Repeat around.

You should have 8 chain loops.

Join with sl st.

Round 3 – White Petals

Into each ch-6 loop work:

sc, hdc, 3 dc, tr, 3 dc, hdc, sc.

Repeat in all 8 loops.

This creates eight full pointed petals.

Join with sl st.

Fasten off the white yarn.

Blue Petal Edging

Attach the light blue yarn at the base of one petal.

Work evenly around each white petal using sc.

At the tip of each petal work:

sc, ch 3, sl st into first ch, sc.

Continue around the next side of the petal.

Repeat around all eight petals.

The small ch-3 picot gives each petal a delicate icy point.

Outer Snowflake Loops

To make the flower larger and more decorative, add another round in blue.

Attach the yarn between two petals.

Work:

ch 7, sc between next two petals.

Repeat around.

On the following round, work into each ch-7 loop:

sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc.

This creates a soft outer scallop around each section.

If you prefer a lighter ornament, leave these loops open instead of filling them.

Decorative Center

Sew a decorative button, pearl, bead, or small metal flower onto the center.

Pass the needle through several crochet stitches rather than only one stitch so the decoration remains secure.

A silver flower button works particularly well with white and blue yarn.

Adding Beads Around the Snowflake

Small silver beads can be attached to the outer points.

Thread a bead onto strong sewing thread.

Pass the needle through the tip of one crochet point, through the bead, and back through the crochet.

Secure firmly at the back.

Repeat around the flower.

You can decorate every point or alternate decorated and undecorated points.

Hanging Loop

Cut approximately 20–25 cm of narrow white or silver ribbon.

Fold it in half.

Pass the ends through the top of the snowflake and tie or sew them securely.

Add one pearl bead above the snowflake if desired.

The loop should be large enough to hang comfortably from a Christmas-tree branch.

Crochet Spiral

The hanging spiral is surprisingly simple to make.

Using white yarn:

Ch 80.

For a shorter ornament, use approximately 50–60 chains.

For a longer ornament, use 90–110 chains.

Row 1

Work 3 dc in the fourth ch from the hook.

Continue working:

3 dc in each chain across.

The crochet will begin curling naturally.

Do not straighten it while working. Allow the spiral to twist by itself.

Fasten off.

Blue Spiral Edging

Attach the blue yarn at one end of the spiral.

Work one sc into each available stitch along the outer edge.

For a more decorative finish, work:

sc, ch 1

repeated along the edge.

Fasten off.

Hold the finished piece vertically and gently twist it until the spiral falls evenly.

Attaching the Spiral

Position one end of the spiral at the bottom center of the snowflake.

Using a yarn needle, sew it securely to the flower.

Make several stitches through both pieces.

The spiral should hang directly beneath the center of the snowflake.

Crystal Drops

For the sparkling hanging decorations, thread several beads onto strong thread.

A simple combination is:

small silver bead – pearl – crystal bead.

Attach one strand to each lower side of the snowflake.

Make the strands slightly different lengths for a more decorative appearance.

For example, one can measure approximately 8 cm and another 12 cm.

Secure every knot carefully.

Version 1 – Christmas Bauble

For the ornament with a ball at the bottom, crochet the snowflake and spiral as described above.

Attach a small lightweight Christmas bauble to the end of the spiral.

You can use a ready-made bauble or create a decorative yarn ball.

For a yarn ball, wrap blue and white thread around a lightweight foam or plastic ball until the surface is covered.

Secure the yarn discreetly with a needle.

Attach the ball firmly to the bottom of the spiral.

Version 2 – Large Tassel

Instead of a bauble, add a long blue-and-white tassel.

Cut approximately 30–40 strands of thread to twice the desired finished tassel length.

Place the strands together and fold them in half.

Tie another piece of thread firmly around the folded center.

Wrap thread several times around the bundle approximately 1–2 cm below the top.

Tie securely.

Trim the bottom evenly.

Mix white, pale blue, and medium blue threads to create the striped effect.

Tassel Head

To create the rounded section above the tassel, wrap thread around the upper portion several times.

Alternatively, crochet a small cover.

Make a magic ring.

Round 1

Work 6 sc into the ring.

Round 2

Work 2 sc in each st around.

Round 3

Work sc around.

Continue for another one or two rounds.

Place this small crochet cap over the top of the tassel and sew it into position.

Adding Bells to the Tassel

Small silver bells can be attached individually around the upper portion of the tassel.

Thread each bell onto strong sewing thread and sew it securely through the tassel head.

Allow the bells to hang freely rather than sewing them tightly against the yarn.

Pearls and crystal beads can also be added between the bells.

Version 3 – Simple Crystal Spiral

For a lighter decoration, omit the large tassel or bauble.

Finish the spiral with one crystal drop.

Thread:

silver bead – pearl – clear crystal pendant

onto strong thread and attach it to the final stitch of the spiral.

This creates a delicate ornament that works especially well in windows.

Making the Spiral Fuller

If your spiral does not curl enough, increase the number of stitches worked into each foundation chain.

Instead of:

3 dc in each ch

use:

4 dc in each ch.

For a softer, more open spiral, use:

2 dc in each ch.

The more stitches placed into each foundation chain, the tighter the finished curl becomes.

Stiffening the Snowflake

If the snowflake feels too soft, it can be lightly stiffened.

Mix a small amount of fabric stiffener according to the product instructions and apply it to the crochet flower.

Shape the petals carefully and allow them to dry flat.

Avoid heavily stiffening the spiral because it should remain flexible.

Blocking

Wet the crocheted snowflake lightly.

Place it on a blocking mat and arrange all eight petals evenly.

Pin each point outward.

Make sure the flower remains circular and symmetrical.

Allow it to dry completely.

The spiral usually does not require traditional blocking. Instead, hang it vertically and arrange the curls with your fingers.

Assembly

Start by finishing and blocking the snowflake.

Attach the decorative center and outer beads.

Sew the crochet spiral to the bottom.

Next, attach the crystal strands to the sides.

Add your chosen bottom decoration: a tassel, Christmas bauble, bell, or crystal pendant.

Finally, attach the ribbon at the top.

Check every bead, bell, and hanging component before displaying the ornament, especially if it will be placed where children or pets can reach it.

The finished decoration should have a large snowflake at the top, a flowing white-and-blue spiral through the center, and a sparkling decorative element hanging from the bottom.
