Three Snowman Spiral Christmas Ornaments

Pattern note: The reference photograph shows finished crochet decorations, not the original written pattern. The instructions below are an original interpretation designed to reproduce the same overall construction: a stuffed snowman head, hat and scarf, a long two-color corkscrew body, and a hanging snowflake ornament. Stitch counts may be adjusted for yarn, hook and desired size.

Project Overview

This set contains three coordinated hanging snowmen. The first wears a black top hat and red scarf, the second a teal winter hat and matching scarf, and the third a red-and-green striped beanie with a green scarf. All three use the same round white snowman head and the same basic spiral construction, so they are ideal for making as a matching Christmas window, door, mantel or tree-decoration set.

Approximate Finished Size

Each ornament measures about 45-55 cm (18-22 in) from the hanging loop to the bottom bauble, depending on the length of the spiral. The head is about 8-10 cm (3-4 in) across. The spiral is approximately 4-5 cm wide.

1. Snowman Head – Make 3

Work continuously in white unless noted. Stuff firmly but keep the face round rather than elongated.

R1: 6 sc in MR. (6)

R2: inc around. (12)

R3: [sc, inc] x 6. (18)

R4: [2 sc, inc] x 6. (24)

R5: [3 sc, inc] x 6. (30)

R6: [4 sc, inc] x 6. (36)

R7-R12: sc around. (36)

Insert the eyes between R8 and R9, approximately 6-7 stitches apart. Begin stuffing.

R13: [4 sc, dec] x 6. (30)

R14: [3 sc, dec] x 6. (24)

R15: [2 sc, dec] x 6. (18)

R16: [sc, dec] x 6. (12). Finish stuffing.

R17: dec around. (6). FO and close.

Face Details

Embroider a curved black smile beneath the eyes. Add short black eyelash stitches if desired. For rosy cheeks, embroider or crochet two small pink circles and sew them on each side of the smile.

Carrot Nose

With orange: ch 4. Starting in 2nd ch from hook, sl st, sc, hdc. FO with a long tail. Roll or pinch the piece into a tiny cone and sew it horizontally at the center of the face. A small embroidered orange triangle can be substituted.

2. Basic Two-Color Spiral Body – Make 3

The reference uses a wide ribbon-like corkscrew with a contrasting white edge. This version is worked as a colored strip first, then edged in white. Adjust the foundation length to change the finished drop.

With the main color, ch 80-95. Work 3 dc in the 3rd ch from the hook and 3 dc in every remaining chain. The strip will curl strongly as you work. FO.

Join white to the outer edge of the spiral and work 1 sc in each dc around the long outside edge. For a more ruffled white trim, work [sc, ch 1] repeatedly or 2 sc in selected stitches. FO and weave in ends. Gently rotate the curls until the spiral hangs evenly.

Color plan: Version A – deep red spiral with white trim. Version B – teal spiral with white trim. Version C – red spiral with white trim; small green accents may be added near the top if desired.

3. Scarves

Make each scarf as a narrow rectangle. Ch 7. Row 1: sc in 2nd ch and across. Ch 1, turn. Continue in sc until the scarf is about 24-30 cm long. FO. Add short yarn fringe to both ends if desired. Wrap once around the neck and let both ends hang down the front/side.

Version A: red scarf

Version B: teal scarf

Version C: medium or olive green scarf

4. Version A – Black Top Hat Snowman

Top Hat Crown

With black: R1 6 sc in MR. R2 inc around (12). R3 [sc, inc] x6 (18). R4 [2 sc, inc] x6 (24). R5 BLO sc around (24). R6-R10 sc around. FO.

Top Hat Brim

Join black in the unused front loops of R4 or at the lower crown edge. Work 1 round of sc, increasing every 3rd stitch. Next round, increase every 4th stitch. Work one final round even or with occasional increases until the brim extends approximately 1.5-2 cm from the crown. FO. Add a narrow red band around the crown. Optional: sew on two tiny green holly leaves and red berry knots.

Assembly

Sew the hat securely to the top of one snowman head. Add the red scarf. Attach the red-and-white spiral beneath the head so the upper curl begins directly below the scarf.

5. Version B – Teal Pom-Pom Beanie Snowman

Beanie

With teal: R1 6 sc in MR. R2 inc around (12). R3 [sc, inc] x6 (18). R4 [2 sc, inc] x6 (24). R5 [3 sc, inc] x6 (30). R6-R9 sc around. Change to white for R10-R11 and work sc around. FO leaving a sewing tail. The lower edge should sit snugly around the top third of the head.

Pom-Pom

Make a small white yarn pom-pom approximately 3-4 cm wide and sew it firmly to the crown. For an all-crochet pom-pom, make a small stuffed sphere: 6 sc in MR, inc around, one round even, dec around, stuff lightly and close.

Assembly

Sew the teal hat to the second head and wrap the teal scarf around the neck. Attach the teal-and-white spiral directly under the head. Keep the white edging facing outward as the spiral descends.

6. Version C – Red & Green Striped Beanie Snowman

Striped Beanie

Begin in red. R1 6 sc in MR. R2 inc around (12). R3 [sc, inc] x6 (18). R4 [2 sc, inc] x6 (24). R5 [3 sc, inc] x6 (30). R6 red sc around. R7 white sc around. R8 green sc around. R9 white sc around. R10-R11 red sc around. FO. The exact stripe order can be changed to match your yarn and preferred proportions.

Red Pom-Pom

Make a small red pom-pom and attach it firmly to the top. A crocheted stuffed ball may be used instead.

Assembly

Sew the striped hat to the third head. Add the green scarf and attach the red-and-white spiral beneath the head.

7. Hanging Loop

For each snowman, cut 20-25 cm of matching yarn or cord. Fold it in half and secure the ends through the top of the hat and into the head so the ornament hangs from its center. Reinforce the attachment with several hidden stitches. Test the balance before trimming the ends.

8. Bottom Snowflake & Bauble

Attach a lightweight white snowflake to the bottom tip of each spiral using strong thread or a short chain. Beneath the snowflake, add a small red bauble to Versions A and C and a teal bauble to Version B. If you prefer an entirely crocheted decoration, substitute a small crocheted ball for the bauble.

Optional Crocheted Snowflake

R1: 6 sc in MR, sl st to first sc. R2: *ch 5, sl st in 2nd ch, sc in next ch, hdc in next, dc in next, sl st in next base stitch* repeat 6 times. FO. Block the points flat and lightly stiffen if desired.

9. Final Assembly Order

Finish and stuff the snowman head; embroider the face and attach the carrot nose.

Make and sew on the chosen hat.

Wrap and secure the scarf around the neck.

Make the long spiral and add its white edging.

Sew the top of the spiral firmly beneath the head/scarf area.

Add the top hanging loop and check that the snowman hangs vertically.

Attach the snowflake and lower bauble to the bottom of the spiral.

Shape the corkscrew by hand so the turns are evenly spaced.

10. Customizing the Length and Curl

For a shorter ornament, begin with 55-70 chains. For a longer window hanging, use 100-120 chains. Three dc in each foundation chain creates a strong curl; 2 dc gives a looser spiral, while 4 dc produces a very tight ruffle. Make a short swatch first if you are using bulky or very fine yarn.

11. Finishing Tips

Use a smaller hook for the head so stuffing does not show between stitches.

Keep all charms lightweight to prevent the spiral from stretching.

Do not flatten the spiral during blocking; reshape it while hanging.

If making all three, use the same head stitch count and spiral chain count for a coordinated set.

For decorations accessible to small children or pets, embroider the eyes and omit detachable beads, bells and small charms.

Quick Pattern Summary

Make a white amigurumi snowman head, add eyes, smile, cheeks and carrot nose. Crochet one of three hats and a matching scarf. Make a long colored corkscrew by working 3 dc in every stitch of an 80-95-chain foundation, then edge the outer side in white. Attach the spiral below the head, add a hanging loop at the top, and finish the lower end with a white snowflake and coordinating bauble.
